The Christmas Snowstorm of 1776
Print shows General George Washington on horseback watching as soldiers cross the Delaware River prior to the attack on the British at Trenton, New Jersey. Painted by Thomas Sully ; etched by William Humphrys ; engraved by George S. Lang.

In his December 27, 1776 report to the Continental Congress, George Washington wrote, "The difficulty of passing the River in a very severe Night, and their march thro' a violent Storm of Snow and Hail, did not in the least abate their Ardour." Interior sections of northern Virginia and parts of central Maryland received 24"-30" snow. Charlottesville, VA picked up 21" and Trenton, NJ measured nearly a foot.
