In his December 27, 1776 report to the Continental Congress, George Washington wrote, "The difficulty of passing the River in a very severe Night, and their march thro' a violent Storm of Snow and Hail, did not in the least abate their Ardour." Interior sections of northern Virginia and parts of central Maryland received 24"-30" snow. Charlottesville, VA picked up 21" and Trenton, NJ measured nearly a foot.
